Carl and Jeri Goldman Chosen as This Years Honorees by Zonta

Honorees of this year’s Zonta Celebrity Tribute are Jeri and Carl Goldman and Radio Station KHTS. Their selection was announced on the air over KHTS this week by Zonta President and 2005 Tribute co-chair Judy Penman. This year’s Tribute dinner, the major fund-raiser for Zonta Club of the Santa Clarita Valley, will be held Friday, Nov. 3, at the Odyssey restaurant. The Goldmans were chosen for their active participation in the community and the fact that their names are recognized throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. The Tribute dinner is a long-standing Zonta event, which in past years has become more of a celebrity roast. This year the event returns to its roots with a more positive recognition format, Penman explained. “Carl and Jeri represent the best of Santa Clarita; involved, generous, and supportive,” Penman said. “The Zonta Club of Santa Clarita could not serve the hundreds of organizations and people they do without the involvement and generosity of Carl and Jeri Goldman.” The Goldmans have been operating KHTS AM-1220 as a hometown radio station since 2003, and have rebuilt the station as a critical voice of the valley. Carl is active in the SCV Chamber of Commerce, the SCV Film and Tourism Committee, local chapter of the American Red Cross, Santa Clarita Disaster Coalition, Michael Hoefflin Foundation and SCV Boys & Girls Club. He also heads a committee for the Hart School District Honor Band Gala and received the Golden Apple Award from the SCV School Administrators in 2005. Jeri was named SCV 2005 Woman of the Year for her community service activities. She is an active supporter of Carousel Ranch, Child & Family Development Center, Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Pediatric Cancer and has chaired the Taste of the Town fundraiser for the Child & Family Center. She also is active on PTA and School Site Council for Sulphur Springs Elementary School. This is not the first time that a local institution has been featured, along with the person or couple at the head of the organization. Past honorees include The Signal, Jim Ventress and the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley, Karl McCarthy from Blue Barrel Disposal, Don and Cheri Fleming of Valencia Acura, and Moe and Linda Hafizi of the Magazine of Santa Clarita.

Save-the-date cards will go out to community leaders and former attendees this summer, invitations are expected to go in the mail by early September, and reserved table seats are expected to sell out early, according to Penman. Co-chairs for the tribute dinner are Barbara Stearns-Cochran and JoAnn Rodriguez.

Zonta sponsors the dinner each year as a fun way to raise funds to further the club’s mission of advancing the status of women.  Zonta’s charitable 501 (c) (3) foundation is now seven years old and has recently adopted a new grant process that will allow local organizations to apply for funds for programs and projects that support women locally.

Zonta Club of the Santa Clarita Valley is known for its hand-on service projects such as the Health Kids Club and Healthy Woman’s Day – a health screening program currently entering its fourth year.  The main support for those programs comes from the Celebrity Tribute Dinner, Rent-a-Santa and a new golf tournament inaugurated this year. With these funds, Zonta is able to support a variety of organizations and programs throughout the valley, according to Penman.
