The incident began about 6 p.m. Sunday, and detectives Torres and Leslie of the Homicide Bureau for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were still investigating the incident as of 11:45 p.m. Sunday night.

It was initially thought to be a hostage situation because the man’s adult daughter was with him in the garage.

Deputies arrived and took a safe position across the street.

They determined that the daughter was not being held against her will. Instead, she refused deputies’ orders to leave the garage.

At some point, the shotgun was lying on the ground and the father and daughter engaged in an altercation involving knives.

Moments later, shots were fired.

A young blind man who was walking along the street at the time told this writer that he heard three shots – pop, pop, pop.

The suspect’s wife, daughter, and the daughter’s baby were escorted to safety.

The suspect was transported by stretcher to an American Medical Response ambulance. His lower chest area was bandaged.

It is unknown whether the suspect fired his weapon.

A different witness said the deputy who fired and struck the suspect was female, although it is unclear whether the reporting party was an eyewitness.

Lt. Tom Bryski, the watch commander at the time, was on scene.

He said he was not authorized to speak to reporters because the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau would be handling the incident.

The Homicide Bureau handles officer-involved shootings.
