Castaic High Hybrid Plan Premieres

William_S_Hart_district_copy_copyThe William S. Hart School District will be showing their new “hybrid” Castaic area high school conceptual plan at a public information meeting at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 11, at Castaic Middle School.

Although the conceptual site plan has been displayed at board meetings there has not been a public or media release. The new “hybrid” site plan will feature an architectural layout with the notable change from two story buildings to single story structures.

This “hybrid” site is comprised of the original preferred Romero Canyon site, plus the addition of an adjacent site. District officials say the addition of a second property allowed for the alteration. The change is expected to provide a significant cost savings for the district since they will no longer have to pay the expense of installing elevators to the second story.

On October 19, 2011 the Hart School District received a proposal from Romero Canyon LLC, that the property adjacent to the preferred Romero Canyon site was made available for purchase. This property, formerly owned by Eugene Lombardi, was acquired by the law firm of Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton, LLP in mid-October.

District officials describe the “hybrid” site as larger and flatter so it would require less grading.

The preferred site is now being analyzed under California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

Robert Challinor, Hart District Superintendent and Tom Cole, Chief Operations Officer will provide an update on the estimated building timeline. The District anticipates the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) will be completed in early summer 2012 at which time the public and all responsible agencies will have the opportunity to comment. After the EIR is completed the Board will have the opportunity to review the EIR, all comments and make a determination if the Board will approve the project. The District hopes to bring the final EIR to the Board for its consideration and potential certification in late summer 2012.

The Hart District urges families in the Castaic and Val Verde communities, with students in 5th grade or younger, to attend the meeting in order to learn more about their future high school. First year students will have the unique opportunity to select a mascot and school colors for the new high school which, if approved, is currently projected to open in August 2015.

“We are moving forward with our plans to bring Castaic and Val Verde residents a comprehensive high school that has been promised to them for the last decade,” Challinor said. “Our hybrid site will serve the community well and provide students with all the top-quality programs and activities that are enjoyed by families at our six other comprehensive high schools.”

A name for the Castaic area high school has not yet been chosen.
