The Castaic Public Library will now have a permanent site to call home, thanks to a unanimous decision from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors at their Tuesday meeting.

The library site on Sloan Canyon Road in Castaic is currently being renovated to add more than 5,000 square feet of library space. Under the current lease agreement, the county had until Dec. 19 to purchase the building. That decision was made Tuesday.

Tony Bell, spokesman for Supervisor Michael Antonovich, called the decision to purchase the building, “an investment in the future of our Castaic community.”

“We of course are excited about this passage, he said. “What we have now is a permanent asset for the benefit of the Castaic community, providing library services, a community room, areas for teens and children, community meetings…and film making.”

The library renovation began in June is expected to be completed in July 2014. Until then, the library is being housed at a different location in the same shopping center.

Several other decisions affecting the Santa Clarita Valley were on the board agenda for Tuesday’s meeting.

The board voted unanimously to approve the fiscal year-end reports for both the County of Los Angeles Public Library and the Fire Department, which also included an increase for the Fire Department’s developer fees in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The 3.7 percent increase to $1.03 per square foot of development will help finance six fire stations planned for the Santa Clarita Valley, for of which have already been built, according to the Fire Department’s letter to the board.

Water rates will go up for Acton customers of Los Angeles County Waterworks District No. 37, thanks to another unanimous board decision, but only by a few dollars, from an average $63.24 per month to an average $65.01.

The 2.8 percent increase allows prices to keep up with inflation.

Recent local elections were also on Tuesday’s agenda.

The results for the Nov. 5 Local and Municipal Consolidated Elections–reported by KHTS AM-1220 on Nov. 6–were officially certified on Monday by Dean Logan, county clerk and registrar-recorder.

The board decided unanimously to declare those results at their Tuesday meeting, per Logan’s recommendation.

Locally, Santa Clarita Valley residents voted to elect board members for the Saugus Union School District, Sulphur Springs School District, Newhall School District and Newhall County Water Board.
