Castaic Rape Suspect Identified, Public’s Assistance Sought In Capture

Detectives from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station have identified a suspect believed to be responsible for a violent sexual assault that occurred in Castaic on Thursday, August 20. 2009. DNA evidence has returned a match to the man pictured here, Eugene Lee Upshaw.

Detectives are seeking public assistance in locating Upshaw who may be anywhere in the nation, but was believed to be in Phoenix, Arizona in July.

A $10 million warrant has been issued by the San Fernando Superior Court for the arrest of Upshaw, who will face numerous felony charges including sexual assault, kidnapping, assault with a deadly, rape by force, sodomy, and other sex crimes.

Upshaw was arrested in 1991 and 1994 in Gallup New Mexico for sex crimes and he should be considered very dangerous.

The incident occurred on Thursday night, August 20, 2009 in Castaic. The suspect asked the victim for a ride and she agreed to provide it to him if he bought her a bottle of alcohol.

The suspect drove the victim’s vehicle to a remote dirt road in the Castaic area where she was assaulted and raped. Upshaw may be responsible for similar crimes in other states and commonly works as a commercial truck driver. He may live on or frequent Indian reservations.
