The name of the civilian is being withheld until Tuesday’s ceremony, according to Sheriff’s Department officials.
Stuart was injured after a head-on collision that left her with severe injuries, but her condition has improved since then, according to her 21-year-old daughter Amanda Carey, of Valencia.
“She’s actually doing a lot better,” said Carey, ”Its amazing to see how far she’s come in the last couple of months.”
Stuart is a 28-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and serves as the unit commander of the Pitchess Detention Center, South Facility in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Right now, she’s living in a rehabilitation center in Encino, where “she’s walking around, but still has a ways to go,” Carey said.
“She said the hardest thing for her is raising her kids over a cellphone,” Carey said.
Since the crash, Carey has assumed the role of big sister and caregiver for her 13-year-old sister and 10-year-old brother, and it’s given her a new appreciation of family.
“Their schedules are so crazy,” Carey said. “I don’t know how parents do it.”
It’s also brought her family, even member who live out of state, much closer together, Carey said, something for which she will always be grateful.
Stuart does plan on attending the award ceremony for the man who saved her life, which will probably be an emotional reunion, Carey said.
“There’s not many things you can say to the person who saved your mom’s life,” Carey said.
She was grateful for her hero, and for the outpouring of concern and help.
“I just want to thank everyone for their support,” she said. “It’s overwhelming — it’s still overwhelming to this day.”
The ceremony will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Sherman Block Sheriff’s Headquarters Building Media Conference Room, 4700 Ramona Blvd., Monterey Park
