Objectionable material discovered on drive in lost and found box in September.

Detectives from the LA County Sheriff’s Special Victims Bureau are investigating the contents of a portable thumb drive found to contain child pornography. The drive was found in a photo lab at College of the Canyons in November.

College of the Canyons spokesman John McElwain said the thumb drive was found in the photo department’s computer lab in late September and placed in a lost and found box.

“We have students lose things all the time; numerous sets of car keys and cell phones are in lost and found boxes all over campus,” he said. “Usually students retrace their steps and recover the items, which could have happened in this case. Whoever lost it could have come back and retrieved it and no one would have been the wiser.”

McElwain said that an instructor, who realized the drive had been sitting in the lost and found box for a couple of months, took it upon himself to try and find its owner, looking on the drive for identifying information.

“When he plugged it in, he immediately saw the objectionable material and called our campus safety department, who called the sheriff’s department,” he said.

The drive was turned over to the sheriff on November 6.

No pornography was found on the school’s computers. McElwain confirmed that only students or campus personnel have access to the lab.

Capt. Joe Gutierrez of the Special Victims Bureau said that detectives had tracked the owner of the hard drive to a residence at Tupelo Ridge Drive, where they served a search warrant and recovered additional evidence.

“We seized other items that might tell us a little more about the drive owner, but we’re still conducting a forensic investigation,” Gutierrez said. “There is a large backlog in our labs, so it could be several months before we have anything else.”

No arrests have been made in the case.
