Chili Cookoff Heats Up Help For Abandoned Animals

brokentailchilicookoffIt’s for better or for worse as far as newly opened St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary is concerned. This no-kill shelter in Canyon Country, built by the Lange Foundation, rescues animals that have been overlooked at other shelters or have been removed from abusive situations. Through care at the shelter, animals are prepared “for a journey to a new, safe, loving world,” according to their website.

This June the Vu Bar & Lounge in Newhall will hold a Broken Tail Chili Cook-off Fundraiser to benefit St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary and the Lange Foundation. For $20, members of the community are invited to enter their favorite chili recipes in a “winner takes all” competition. Participants must bring their own ingredients and equipment, and burners will be provided by the Vu.

You do not have to participate in the cook-off to come and taste the chili and purchase raffle tickets for items donated by companies such as Universal Studios, Canyon Theatre Guild, and The Tournament Players Club in Valencia.

The Lange Foundation needs the funds, because it makes a lifetime commitment to its animals, sometimes rescuing pets in need of surgery, shouldering those medical costs themselves.

Lisa Lambert, who works at St. Bonnie’s, pointed out, “We are a no-kill facility, so if they’re not adopted out or unable to be adopted out, they live with us forever.”

Lambert said that between 60 and 70 animals are adopted out each month, between the Lange Foundation’s two shelters, in Santa Clarita and in West Lost Angeles.

The Broken Tail Chili Cook-off will be held June 16. Participants will start cooking at 10 a.m. and judging is at 2 p.m. If you are interesting in entering your chili, contact the Vu at (661)255-7833. To donate raffle items contact Kimbyrly Valis at (661)414-4440.
