Chili Cookoff Promises Hot Weekend Fun

chilibearThe perfect end-of-summer event is coming up next weekend and it promises to be a hot one.

The fifth annual Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Fun In The Sun Chili Cookoff will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Jack Bones Equestrian Center in Castaic, featuring more than 20 chili booths, music, entertainment and activities for the children.

The event, which traditionally draws hundreds of people looking for the perfect chili, is a benefit for Special Olympics, Santa Clarita as well as Heads Up Therapy on Horseback and Fueled By the Fallen, memorial race cars supporting military and public safety personnel.

The cookoff started at the Sheriff’s Department more than 25 years ago and is one of the biggest weekend events in the area. This year, guests will enjoy music from live bands, equestrian demonstrations, military displays, a petting zoo, dunk tank and of course, some pretty delicious chili.

In addition to the chili booths, other food items will be available at reasonable prices; beverages for adults will be available to those who provide appropriate proof of age.

Fun In The Sun Chili Cards will be sold for $5 each on the day of the event, entitling the bearers to tastes of the spicy concoctions.

Chili booths will compete in numerous categories for awards in culinary skills, booth decoration and team spirit. New this year is the restaurant category, inviting local restaurants to come and compete to possibly have their names added to the annual Tournament Trophy.

In addition, guests may take home a fur-ever friend, as the Castaic Animal Shelter will conduct adoptions on site.

The Jack Bones Equestrian Center is accessible via the Parker Road exit off the northbound I-5 to Castaic Road south. Continue a half-mile to Tapia Canyon Road east, and follow the signs to the event.
