Renowned Hong Kong-based impressionist Tim Tien (pictured) will demonstrate his signature oil painting techniques in a special event sponsored and hosted by the Santa Clarita Artists’ Association at the Barnes & Noble community room in Valencia on Monday, March 19, starting at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Tien participated at numerous national exhibitions and plein air events across the US, and was honored with first place awards and Best of Show.
Besides being juried into exhibitions such as the International Fine Art Fair; the Biannual Show of the California Art Club, the Gold Medal Exhibition; the Annual Salon International Exhibition, the Carmel Art Festival, the San Luis Obispo plein air event, Tien also serves as Juror for the 16th biannual Blinn House show of the California Art Club (CAC).

“When I paint, my concentration is on arranging different color next to one another to get a harmonious whole. I’m often surprised by the effect of how just changing one color can make a painting sing differently. It is this joy of discovery that I share in my painting,” Tien said.
His subject matter varies. Be it figurative, landscape or still-life, he creates works of great sensitivity and delight. There is emotional intensity in Tim’s figurative painting, with impact of color and light on his landscape, as well as a poetic presence from his still-life.
Tien studied oil painting intensively for many years with renowned artists who can be traced back to the lineage of the old master and the Russian impressionist. Although his training is strongly grounded in the representational and figurative style (of Van Gogh, Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso and Michelangelo), he is also influenced by Chinese brush painting.
Besides painting daily, Tien has been teaching oil painting since 2008. He has taught at BMAI Art Institute in Montrose, Calif., Kicks Studio in Pasadena, the San Gabriel Fine Art Association, and privately in the San Gabriel Valley.
The SCAA’s monthly general meeting is held in the community room at Barnes & Noble, 23630 Valencia Blvd., Valencia 91355 (at Magic Mountain Parkway).
