Officials in the Newhall area of the California Highway Patrol made 28 arrests for driving under the influence during the recent Maximum Enforcement Period over the Memorial Day weekend.

Officer John Lutz reported that the number of arrests were nearly double the arrests made last year, when 17 drivers were taken into custody.

He said that there were no fatal accidents during this period this year and in 2009.
