If you think you can continue to ignore the cell phone laws, down that Double-Double and put on your mascara when you’re speeding down the freeway, think again.

After a yearlong campaign against impaired drivers that proved vigilance against distracted driving was a good thing, the California Highway Patrol is now determined to continue lowering the number of incidents involving drivers with divided attention.

For the fourth year in a row, the state recorded a decline in deaths related to driving under the influence. The news coincided with the conclusion of a federally-funded yearlong DUI enforcement campaign.

“DUI has always been a huge safety concern for the law enforcement community and the motoring public,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “Impaired driving is a dangerous and irresponsible behavior that results in hundreds of victims killed and thousands of others injured every year in California.”

In the last 12 months, the CHP conducted nearly 240 sobriety/driver license checkpoints, 100 DUI task force operations and more than 50,000 hours of proactive DUI enforcement patrol resulting in more than 1,900 DUI arrests in this campaign.

“Even with the conclusion of this grant, DUI will continue to be a major area of focus for the Department,” added Farrow.
