CHP Hoping To Avoid A Real Halloween Nightmare

Drunk Driving enforcement will be in place for Halloween weekend

As Halloween takes over the night life here in Santa Clarita and beyond, local law enforcement is hoping that people will be responsible in their celebrations.

Just like with most holidays, Halloween poses a substantial risk of drunk drivers. Last year alone, 1,258 people were arrested on drunk driving charges in California over the course of the weekend just before Halloween.

“If you’re caught driving under the influence, officers will be treating you to time in the local jail,” commented CHP Captain Steve Bernard, who runs the Newhall Area office.

While the number of DUI instances may rise on holidays, the CHP stresses that it is a year round problem. Nearly 1,600 people died last year as a result of alcohol related accidents. Fourteen percent of the victims in those accidents were under the age of twenty one.

How you can help: keep an eye out for drivers who appear to be intoxicated on the roads. A quick call to 911 is recommended, and the CHP will ask for the vehicle’s license plate number, along with the make, model and location.

And the CHP is asking alert residents to help battle other safety issues that occur around Halloween.

“Helping to ensure the safety of trick-or-treaters will take a combined effort from both motorists and parents,” said Captain Bernard. “By taking a few extra precautions, everyone can have a fun and safe Halloween.”

Please drive slowly in residential areas and pay extra attention for children darting out into the street. Parents should make sure their children look both ways before crossing the street, and are wearing a costume that make them visible during night time.
