Eduardo Gutierrez, 36, of Azusa, drove his 2003 Ford Expedition through a lane closure on I-5, just south of Highway 138, according to a CHP report.

The CHP unit, which was taking part in a construction detail, conducted an enforcement stop on the vehicle and the vehicle came to a stop just south of SR-138.

When officers approached Gutierrez’ vehicle, the Expedition accelerated away, reaching speeds of more than 100 mph.

Gutierrez’ vehicle continued down the I-5 at speeds in excess of 100 mph, passing traffic and using the center divider, according to a CHP report.

CHP units, utilizing the spike strip, appeared to disable the Expedition, and it came to a stop south of Parker Road.

Gutierrez appeared to be under the influence and was arrested without incident and subsequently transported to the Newhall Area office for an evaluation.

Initially, the suspect was cooperative; however, during the evaluation, Gutierrez became combative and attempted to flee the building.

Officers struggled with Gutierrez, taking him to the ground and deploying a “conductive energy weapon, which is similar to a Taser gun.

Gutierrez was restrained and sustained facial injuries during the struggle.

He then was transported to Henry Mayo Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Upon his release from the hospital, Gutierrez will be charged with the following; felony evading, driving under the influence of a controlled substance, battery on a peace officer and resisting arrest.

He will be held in lieu of $100,000 bail, and he already had a $30,000 warrant out for his arrest at the time of the incident.
