CHP Says Buckle Up, Drive Right This Labor Day

Extra caution called for over holiday weekend

As Californians pack and prep for another three-day weekend, the CHP makes special preparations to keep the state’s highways and byways safe for holiday road trips.

Labor Day weekend is a Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP), during which every available CHP officer will be on patrol. They will be especially watchful for motorists driving over the speed limit, under the influence, or without a seatbelt, the three major causes of highway deaths. Operation Combined Accident Reduction Effort (CARE), a program emphasizing patrols on interstate highways, will also be in effect.

Last year 40 people died on California highways during Labor Day weekend. The CHP reports that more than half of those killed in its jurisdiction were not wearing seatbelts.

“Make sure that you and your family safely wrap up a great summer. Observe all laws, drive defensively, and buckle up your loved ones,” stated CHP Commissioner Joe Farrrow.

The CHP recommends the following simple steps to ensure safety on the road :

• Buckle up all vehicle occupants every time.
• Observe all speed limits.
• Never drink and drive. Designate a driver.
• Make frequent stops on long trips to stay alert.
• Don’t let delays change your driving behavior.

“We want everybody’s holiday to be filled with pleasant memories. Join the CHP in making that happen by driving safely throughout the Labor Day holiday,” said Commissioner Farrow.
