Christmas Light Tour Helps Local Charities

alt It’s big, loud, and brings holiday cheer to good little boys and girls in the Santa Clarita Valley.

If you thought Santa you were wrong.  We’re talking about the KHTS fire truck and its annual KHTS Mac Fire Truck Christmas Holiday Tour.

Carl Goldman, owner of the truck and KHTS, auctions off rides on the 1948 Mack engine at local charity events like the Boys and Girls Club’s Festival of Trees.

“The truck is a big selling point at the Festival of Trees and it’s something that people are looking forward to bidding on,” said Dawn Coup, assistant to the Executive Director at the Boys and Girls Club.

The auctioning of the truck has helped raise more than $250,000 for non-profits throughout Santa Clarita over the years.

The winners of the Christmas Holiday Tour are treated to a two hour tour of Christmas lights throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.

Lisa and Jeff Scholz won the auction for the tour from this year’s Festival of Trees, making a generous donation to the Boys and Girls Club.

“We’ve been to the Festival of Trees many years and we really look forward to it,” said Lisa Scholz.  “We are so happy to donate whatever we can to that group.”firetruckScholz

Together with 13 of their friends they toured the city while sipping hot chocolate, and were even recorded by a British film company working in the area.

“Its so much fun to let people see the different lights in a different fashion,” said Goldman.  “Everyone in the neighborhood comes out and wants to see the truck and get their picture taken with it.”

Ron Singer, the trucks previous owner, helps Goldman out with the Christmas Holiday Tour, and also drives families of the Hoefflin Foundation to see lights.

“Its part of history, driving it and hearing the large exhaust, and the large steering wheel with no power steering, it puts you in that era of time when then fire truck was running,” said Singer.  “People recognize the fire truck which brings smiles to their faces, and here I am driving a part of history.”alt

The KHTS fire truck has a unique history, starting its life as a working fire truck for the town of Palmyra, New Jersey, a Philadelphia suburb.

It was retired from service in the ’70s and served the town as a parade truck until the ’90s when the city of Atlanta purchased it to tour Old Town Atlanta.

In 2003 Dr. Ron Singer purchased the truck for his collection here in Santa Clarita, and then sold the truck to KHTS in 2006.
