Students in kindergarten through sixth grade are encouraged to submit artwork for a chance to win the River Rally T-shirt Contest.

The city of Santa Clarita is inviting local kindergarten through sixth grade students to create an original design to be featured on the 20th Annual River Rally event t-shirt.

The theme is “Happy 20th Birthday River Rally” and participants are encouraged to illustrate the importance of the River Rally and how it protects the local environment.

Open now through Aug. 22, artists may use up to six colors and their design may not exceed 8″ by 8″. They are also allowed to use any art medium including: markers, crayons, water colors and paint.

River Rally is an annual event hosted to bring together thousands of Santa Clarita residents to clean up a portion of the Santa Clara River. Since 1994, River Rally volunteers have collected more than 387,000 pounds of trash and debris helping to preserve the longest free-flowing river in Southern California.

Green Santa Clarita hosts the “2014 Annual River Rally” on Sept. 20 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

“The city of Santa Clarita goes to great lengths to protect our local environment, including hosting eco-minded events like River Rally,” said Mayor Laurene Weste. “The River Rally t-shirt art contest is a fun way to inspire creativity and community involvement in River Rally, which helps protect one of the one of the last natural river systems remaining in Southern California.”

The winner will be contacted by Sept. 5 and their artwork is to be printed on the t-shirts handed out to all volunteers at the 20th Annual River Rally and Environmental Expo on Sept. 20.

One entry is permitted per artist and completed designs and entry forms must be submitted in high resolution via email to ljardine@santaclarita.com or environment@santaclarita.com.
