City Celebrates 19th Annual Pride Week

If you’ve seen your neighbors working in the yard or a group of young people hauling trash out of the alleys and riverbeds, it can mean only one thing – the 19th annual Santa Clarita Pride Week is underway.  With a kickoff Saturday, nearly 400 community members and groups are currently signed up to beautify City streets, parks, schools and other areas around town before sundown on Saturday.

Pride Week is aimed at ridding the City of litter, debris, and graffiti and gives residents the opportunity to take an active part in keeping the City beautiful. Even if you’re not part of the 400 people already rolling up their sleeves, you can still sign up or create a project of your own by having a block clean-up or landscaping day.

“Pride Week represents an annual opportunity where residents can come together with the City to keep the community looking great,” said Mayor Frank Ferry. “The program is designed to instill community pride while maintaining the beautiful neighborhood aesthetic for which Santa Clarita is known.”

Santa Clarita citizens of all ages can volunteer to help clean up and beautify the community by picking up litter in their community throughout the week. Individuals and family members from Community churches, cultural associations, Boy Scout, Girl Scout and Cub Scout troops, home school associations, sports teams, community action groups and more have already signed up to participate in various beautification events across the City. The City will provide free T-Shirts and trash bags to those who volunteer for the trash removal duties.

Pride Week events scheduled for the week of April 12-18 include City park clean-ups, a Towsley Canyon clean-up, trash removal at the Historical Society, litter and graffiti removal at elementary schools across the valley, graffiti removal in City washes and more. Teens Against Graffiti (TAG), for example, will paint over graffiti from Santa Clarita washes on April 18 from 8 a.m.-12 noon.

To celebrate everyone’s accomplishments, the City is holding Earth Day Unplugged/Arbor Day, where people can come to learn about the environment and participate in Earth-friendly activities. There will be music, food and activities for all ages. The festival will be held at Central Park on Bouquet Canyon Road.
