City Celebrating Progress On Cross Valley Connector

Roadway will be fully complete in 14 months.

This afternoon, the City of Santa
Clarita will host a ceremonial ground breaking for the
final phase of the Cross Valley Connector. The roadway, conceived over a decade
ago, will connect the 14 freeway at Golden Valley Road
to Interstate 5 at Highway 126 by way of an eight lane east/west
thoroughfare.  `

According to Mayor Frank Ferry, the Cross Valley Connector
is an incredibly valuable project because it offers much needed relief to
traffic congestion around the City.

"We're in a position where Soledad
Canyon is the really only east/west
road that traverses town," he said. "[On the completed Cross Valley Connector] you're going to have four lanes in each direction, and so you should see
significant traffic come off all of the other major roads in Santa Clarita."

With transportation issues consistently topping the list of
resident's concerns, the City made the roadway project a priority. With a price
tag of $245 million dollars, the City relied on substantial cooperation by
Congressman Buck McKeon, Newhall Land,
Los Angeles County
and private developers.

Most of the roadway is already complete, although the last
phase will connect Golden Valley Road
and Newhall Ranch Road over
the Santa Clara riverbed.

The roadway is also built to expand up to eight total lanes
for all 8 ½ miles. Currently some portions only run 4-6 lanes due to lower
volume. This flexibility is crucial to the City's efforts to create long term
traffic solutions.

"It's needed. We've got to keep up with the demands of not
only growth within our community, but we have so many young drivers who turn 16
each year…that impacts our roadway also," Mayor Ferry said.

The City's groundbreaking event will take place this
afternoon at 3:00 p.m. near Golden
Valley Rd. and Valley
Center Dr.
