City Council Election Tuesday – Get Out And Vote

khts_election_scrolladIt’s all over but the shouting and three top-vote getters will be celebrating Tuesday night after a long and sometimes contentious City Council campaign.

The contenders for the three open seats – incumbents Frank Ferry, Laurene Weste, Marsha McLean and newcomers Harrison Katz, TimBen Boydston, David Gauny, Daniel Henriquez, David Galvan, Henry Schultz, Kenneth Mann and Johnny Pride – have spent at least the last five months doing everything they can to get your vote.

According to Kevin Tonoian, Technology Manager for the city who is helping new City Clerk Sarah Gorman with the election, as of 3 p.m. today, they have received 9,049 vote-by-mail ballots.

“We still have more that could come in later today and will come in tomorrow’s mail,” Tonoian said. “They can also be brought directly to the City Clerk’s office or any polling place.”

Residents unsure of where they go to vote can easily locate their precincts by going to www.votesantaclarita.com. The website also offers a variety of in-depth information about the election.

Volunteers have been sorting the mail-in ballots by precinct to speed up counting on election night. Ballots will be tallied in City Council chambers; KHTS will be broadcasting live and posting results on hometownstation.com as they come in.

Local residents can also watch the proceedings on Channel 20, SCVTV.

Tonoian said that there are 89,209 active, registered voters in the city limits, but they only expect 17 to 19 percent of those eligible to cast their votes.

“From our perspective, the city does everything it can to encourage residents to actively participate in local elections,” Tonoian said. “We’re proud of the things we do.”

KHTS’s live coverage will begin at 7 p.m. and feature candidate interviews, results as they come in and live reports from candidate gatherings around town. Coverage will continue until the votes are all tabulated.
