City Council Race Kicks Off With Threesome

frankandsons

Just when you thought it was safe to walk past the polling place, three incumbent Santa Clarita councilmembers announced their intentions to run in the 2010 City Council race.

Mayor Frank Ferry, Mayor Pro Tem Laurene Weste and Councilmember Marsha McLean all announced Thursday that they are in the running for the three seats that will be up for grabs in April.

Gathered in the driveway of the fire station on Citrus Drive, under overcast skies, the trio was surrounded by commissioners and supporters excited about the teamwork between the three.

“We don’t always agree, but that’s OK, because that what you expect of us,” said Ferry, who was the first to throw his hat in the ring. He talked about how he ran for council several years ago and was “clearly the new kid on the block” but felt that he wanted to serve Santa Clarita, which he considers “absolutely the best place to raise a family,” putting his hands on the shoulders of his two sons adding “These guys are the reason I ran.”

“In 22 years, this (multiple candidates announcing their intentions) has never been done,” Ferry said. “But specifically now, in the times we’re having, we have to stand together for the success of the community.”

Weste echoed Ferry’s boosterism, saying that the current Council “believes we’re doing the very best for you.” She commented on her long-term residence of “more than 40 years” as one of the reasons for her commitment to preserving trails, open space, parks and the river “so we can prevent the Santa Clarita Valley from becoming the San Fernando Valley without warm, natural open spaces.”

All three candidates cited the city’s track record of low crime and public safety and preparedness for disaster and noted that while other cities were canceling events and programs, Santa Clarita is still in the black.

“Most importantly,” Weste said, “you don’t get anything done without a good team behind you.”

When McLean stepped up to speak, the sprinklers came on, prompting someone in the crowd to say “Marsha, you walk on water.” After the laughter died down, she said that her involvement in helping fight Elsmere Canyon early in the city’s existence motivated her to seek public office.

“I know how the levels of government work,” she said. “And I’m proud that our residents can see five local Councilmembers working for them that they can come to with their issues.”

The election is scheduled for April, 2010.
