City Council Removes Term Limits For Commissioners

khts_citymatters_scvlogoThe regular City Council meeting was held on Tuesday. The council had many items on their agenda.

One of the items approved was a resolution to remove term limits for city commissioners and board members.

Committee members are appointed by the City Council. People spoke before the council against the resolution but the council still approved the measure.

Dr. Michael Miller gave an update on the Arts commission.

“Our goal is to strengthen and build organizational capacity in Santa Clarita Valley arts and to create awareness of Santa Clarita arts and cultural assets.” Councilmember Bob Kellar added, “We’re going to do great things”.

The agenda item to rename the Golden Valley Bridge the “Deputy Cameron Glover Memorial Bridge” was removed. Councilmember Laurie Ender cited that the city needed a bigger picture and a process for naming public places and streets. Deputy Glover was killed in an off-duty motorcycle accident on April 28.

Several service contracts were awarded. The first was to security guard service for city hall, park facilities and Metrolink stations. The second service contract was for tree trimming.

A grant was accepted from the South Coast Air Quality Management District to plant 500 California native trees.

The City also directed the Sanitation Board members to develop a legal strategy to combat potential fees. Councilmember Ferry replaced Kellar as an alternate on the Sanitation Board. For the full story on the water sanitation controversy, click here.

During the public participating portion of the meeting, speakers came out to voice their anger at Councilmember Frank Ferry’s comments regarding developmental terrorists as unbefitting and disgraceful.

Ferry commented during the May 25 meeting that some residents are committing a sort of developmental terrorism. Ferry claimed that they are protesting and disseminating incorrect information on developments without allowing the projects to go through the city’s full development process.

“I have no problem with any neighborhood speaking before the council,” said Ferry in response to critics. “In a community the public process is for every citizen to be heard”.

The meeting was adjourned in honor of Marine Corps. Private First Class Jake Suter. Suter was killed in Afghanistan May 29.

Kellar spoke at the invocation about Suter. “Jake represented what’s right with America”. Kellar added, “We will not forget this man. God bless you Jake”.
