City Holds Free Parenting Workshop

Discussion About Child and Teen Depression

The City of Santa Clarita’s Youth and Family Program will be hosting a free parenting workshop on Thursday May 19, 2005 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. This workshop, open to the public, will address the topic of child and teen depression.

Neal Goldberg, a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist will lead the session and will discuss topics which range from the symptoms of child and teen depression, causes, to treatments. The workshop will be held in Council Chambers on the first floor of City Hall. City Hall is located at 23920 Valencia Boulevard.

This workshop is one in a series of free parenting workshops sponsored by the City of Santa Clarita throughout the year. The City also conducts a number of low-cost parenting classes that encourage active parenting and develop parenting skills for all stages of parenthood.

“Depression is a serious condition that affects thousands of children and teens each year,” said Veronica Navarro, for the City. “We offer free workshops throughout the year to help parents deal with the increasing number of parenting issues they might face. This workshop will be helpful for anyone who observes their child or teen’s behavior changing due to depression.”

Often times, changes in behavior are attributed simply to being part of growing up. Moodiness and irritability are commonly assigned to being typical teenagers. However, if your child or teen is irritable, angry, or inconsolable, does not listen, appears to be isolated, overeats, under-eats, seems unmotivated, or has lost interest in school, friends, and family activities, these may be signs of depression. This free parenting workshop will help parents and guardians identify whether their youth might benefit from behavioral therapy.
