The City of Santa Clarita is announcing an open call to artists to design a functional bike rack with high artistic merit to be implemented in front of the Canyon Country Community Center.

The artwork is a part of the Art in Public Places initiative that seeks to make public art a prominent feature in the Santa Clarita Valley.

  “The Art in Public Places program exists because we feel that art betters people’s lives and improves the visual environment by adding these creative pieces to the public,” said Arts and Events Supervisor Jeff Barber.

 “The bike rack project for the Canyon Country Community Center will allow us  to infuse art into a Santa Clarita facility  and enhance the facility by bringing a functional role to art,” said Barber.

 The bike rack design should be able to support and secure at least eight to 10 bikes total. In addition, the rack design should consider overall safety, should require low maintenance, and be durable.  

Designs should carefully balance form with function, and must comply with national bicycle parking standards. For those standards, artists should access the Bicycle Parking Guidelines, produced by the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals, on APBP’s website.

 There are no restrictions to the theme of the art piece and the art piece should reflect appropriate content.  Artists may submit only one proposal for the project. Artists are encouraged to use color in their designs.

The selected artist will receive a stipend of $3000 that includes design fee, project-related travel, consultation throughout and project fabrication, and other artist-related costs. The City of Santa Clarita is expected to fund installation and site preparation costs.

 The deadline to apply for the bike rack art piece is Oct. 11 at 11 p.m.  and the project’s Artist Selection committee is expected to make the selection for the three finalists on Oct. 25. The completed artwork is expected to be installed April 2014.
