City Library Launches Summer Reading Program July 1

2011_Summer-ReadingThe Santa Clarita Public Library will launch the 2011 Summer Reading Program on Friday, July 1, at the Canyon Country and Newhall libraries and on Tuesday, July 5, at the Valencia library.

This year’s theme, “One World, Many Stories,” will encourage children and teens to explore the wonders of the world and its many cultures through books and an exciting series of library programs.

“The summer reading program at the Santa Clarita Public libraries is designed to advance literacy and academic performance by engaging kids, teens and adults in reading and hands-on reading-related activities,” commented Mayor Marsha McLean. “Fun, interactive summer reading programs are an encouraging way to put books in the hands of children and go a long way towards helping improve reading skills during the summer months.”

Kick-off events for the summer reading program and the grand re-opening of the libraries will be held at the Canyon Country and Newhall Libraries on Friday, July 1, and at the Valencia Library on Tuesday, July 5.

Children enrolling in the program will receive a reading log where they can set up a personal reading goal. As participants finish books, they will log the book titles. Once they’ve reached the halfway point to their reading goal, they will receive a prize. Participants will receive another prize once they complete their reading goal. At the end of the program, the library will hold an end-of-summer party on Saturday, August 13, to celebrate all readers with prizes for those who completed their logs.

Each location will feature a series of hands-on programs related to the Summer Reading Program, including weekly craft programs, fun activities related to the theme, Wacky Wednesday events exploring the week’s featured continent, and weekend programs emphasizing the cultures of the world.

Each week of the Summer Reading Program will explore a different continent:

Week 1 – “G’Day, Australia”

Week 2 – “Escape to Europe”

Week 3 – “African Safari”

Week 4 – “Adventures in Asia”

Week 5 – “Cruising to North and South America”

Week 6 – “Chillin’ in Antarctica”

The Santa Clarita Public Library will also offer related Summer Reading Programs for teens and adults. The teen program—“You Are Here”—will feature fun programs and events specially geared to keep young adults engaged in reading with their friends during the summer. The adult summer reading program, “Novel Destinations,” will encourage reading among adults with opportunities to meet and discuss books, meet other readers, log their reading and be eligible for prizes.

End of summer parties will be held on Saturday, August 13, at all three locations. For details on programs and performances at each location, visit the library events calendar at or contact Santa Clarita Youth Services Coordinator Kelly Behle at
