An end to a nearly decade long battle between Santa Clarita residents and the Cemex Mega Mine may be over if Congressman Buck McKeon can pass a resolution bill through Congress. However, in order to do that, McKeon needs to show his fellow Congressional members that the bill has a high level of support from the involved parties.

Now, after years of asking for public opposition to the mine, the city of Santa Clarita is now asking for letters of support for McKeon’s legislation.

The bill has been dubbed a “win-win-win” because it satisfies Santa Clarita, Cemex and the city of Victorville.

Since Cemex owns the mining rights to property near the Santa Clarita border, they had planned to mine 73 million tons of minerals from it over a 20 year period. The permits to mine on the land were granted by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and are very valuable.

In the legislation, it calls for the BLM to withdraw the mining contracts for the Soledad Canyon Road property, and in return trade it for land near Victorville. Cemex would not be able to mine that new land, however they would be allowed to sell it to the City of Victorville, incurring profits equal to those Cemex would have earned by mining near Santa Clarita.

Accepted and backed by all sides involved, the bill now needs to clear the federal approval process, which includes a run through Congress and the President’s signature. In order to do that it is imperative that letters of support be submitted so that Congressional members have proof of the positive nature of the bill.

To make it easy, the city of Santa Clarita has devised several stock forms where residents and groups can simply fill in the blanks to complete their letter of support. You can download the appropriate forms below.
