City of Santa Clarita to Distribute Used Oil Recycling Kits

On June 22 and 29, 2005, the City of Santa Clarita will distribute free used oil recycling kits to Santa Clarita residents. The free kits will be given out at upcoming “Route 66 Bike Night” events. Both “Bike Nights” will be held at 6:00 p.m. at the Route 66 Classic Bar & Grill, located at 18730 Soledad Canyon Road.

Kit distribution is being coordinated by the City’s Environmental Services Division in an effort to increase participation in the City’s curbside oil and filter recycling program, as well as to raise awareness about the benefits of recycling oil. The kits, purchased with grant funding from the California Integrated Waste Management Board, are the first oil recycling kits of their kind for the City, and include a collection container, a funnel, a shop rag, a filter bag, spill mat, and tire gauge.

After picking up their kit at either “Route 66 Bike Night,” City residents can call Curbside Inc. at 1-800-HHW-PKUP to schedule a free collection of their used oil and filters from their home. Residents can also deliver their waste materials to any local Certified Collection Center. For a list of locations, call 1-800-CLEAN-UP or visit www.1800cleanup.org.

The City of Santa Clarita’s Environmental Services Division strives to make Santa Clarita a better place to live and work by developing environmental and pollution prevention programs. The division oversees the administration of a public education/outreach program which was designed to meet the mandated requirements of both the Clean Water Act and the California Integrated Waste Management Act.

“Recycling used oil helps prevent contamination of our local landfills, rivers, and oceans,” said Travis Lange, Environmental Services Division Manager for the City. “We hope these free kits will encourage more residents to take part in the great oil-recycling program the City has put in place.”

The kits also will soon be distributed at other community events as well as City Hall. Proof of residency in Santa Clarita is all that is required for a free kit.

Call the City’s Environmental Services Division at (661) 286-4098 for more information on distribution locations. More information can also be found online at www.santa-clarita.com.
