City Offers Cool Place for Seniors to Beat the Heat

The City is advising seniors to stay cool

With current summer temperatures reaching record highs and City and County officials urging residents to conserve energy, days are not enjoyable in a warm home. The City is advising seniors to stay cool by visiting the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Station, located at 22900 Market Street in Santa Clarita.

Seniors can enjoy free daily activities such as aerobics, Tai’Chi, dancing, watercolor and oil painting classes. While relaxing in a comfortable and air-conditioned facility, seniors can take advantage of the small library of books and magazines, play puzzles and games such as bingo, watch television and enjoy the company of everyone at the center. The center also has a piano where seniors like to gather and around and sing to tunes. Seniors can also enjoy hot and nutritious meals prepared by the center.  A two-dollar donation is requested, however not required.

The Santa Clarita Valley Seniors Center’s hours of operation are Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The hours will be extended if needed and by request of the guests.

“In an effort to conserve energy in the home, residents can turn off the air conditioner and visit the Valencia Town Center, local libraries and the City’s Activities Center to cool off,” said Adele Macpherson , Community Services Superintendent. “These places are nicely cooled and give residents something to do outside of the home.”
