City, Sheriff, and Fire Department Warn of Illegal Fireworks

In an effort to assure the 2005 4th of July is fire-free, the City of Santa Clarita has teamed up with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station to remind residents about the high fire danger, and that even during 4th of July week-end, fireworks are illegal in the City of Santa Clarita and in Los Angeles County.

With the rainy winter season, Santa Clarita has a large amount of foliage and brush which are excellent accelerants for fire.  It only takes one firecracker to set off a brush fire – something Santa Clarita officials are very concerned about this summer season.

“We are letting our residents know that fireworks are not only illegal in Santa Clarita, they are a fire hazard and one that we will not tolerate.  Any fireworks spotted by our patrols will be confiscated,” commented Mayor Cameron Smyth.

The City and Sheriff’s Department Emergency Communications Team will start patrolling neighborhoods this week, including high-risk canyon areas, to seek out illegal fireworks.  In addition, the Sheriff’s Volunteers on Patrol will also be driving through the neighborhoods, looking for illegal fireworks.

According to Los Angeles County Fire Assistant Chief Matt Gil, fire department personnel will also be on alert for illegal fireworks.  Fire crews will be on high alert this weekend as there is a high fire danger.

“Local fire units will be patrolling within the community to discourage the use of illegal fireworks and the misuse of safe and sane fireworks,” explains Chief Gil.

State law provides for a fine of at least $500 and/or a year in jail upon conviction for violating fireworks laws.  Some violations are a felony!  Fireworks may cause burns, injuries and fires.  Violators can be held responsible for damages, as well as having to pay a fine and/or go to jail.  Parents are liable for any damage or injuries caused by their children using fireworks.

Residents are encouraged to enjoy one of several community fireworks shows including a free show sponsored by the City at the Westfield Town Center on July 4 at 9:15 p.m.  Additional fireworks shows on July 4 in the Santa Clarita Valley will be presented by Castaic Lake, at Richard Rioux/Stevenson Ranch Park, and at Six Flags Magic Mountain.

Anyone who wishes to turn in illegal fireworks can do so at any of the local fire stations.  Residents who see illegal fireworks are encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Department immediately at 661-255-1121.
