City Switches to New Environmentally Friendly Leaf Blowers

The City of Santa Clarita has taken yet another step in its effort to be a truly “green” City by trading in nine old leaf blowers for new, more environmentally friendly blowers. As part of a program offered by the Air Quality Management District (AQMD), the City was able to get the new Stihl brand blowers for a total of $200. New blowers typically cost about $500 each. City staff members use the blowers at various locations throughout the City, including the seventeen parks facilities. The new blowers offer the same efficiency as the old, but emit substantially less exhaust into the air. “The City is always trying to be environmentally conscious,” said Wayne Weber, Parks Superintendent for the City. “These new leaf blowers help us to maintain the City properties without causing damage to the environment.” In addition to the new blowers, the City is already using several Compressed Natural Gas vehicles, and the new Transit Maintenance Facility set to open this year is an environmentally “green” building. The City has also enacted an Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Policy for all other materials purchased by the City.
