The second phase of the Old Town Newhall Streetscape project included major improvements on two blocks of Main Street, from 8th Street to Lyons Ave. Sidewalk pavers, hardscape and tree planting are completed, as well as the installation of landscaping and street furniture. Phase one of the streetscape project covered Main Street from 6th Street to 8th Street and was completed in 2009.
Beautiful new oaks, sycamores and mesquite trees and drought-friendly shrubs now line the newly-paved streets along with new and widened sidewalks and crosswalks comprised of a mixture of brick and boardwalk. Wooden lodge poles and streetlamps reminiscent of old gas lamps adorn light poles, creating a unique ambiance while capturing the spirit of the old west.
The City is thrilled to celebrate the completion of the exciting Old Town Newhall streetscape project,” said Mayor Laurene Weste. “This project is part of an ongoing effort to create an exciting arts and entertainment district in Old Town Newhall that encompasses the historic flavor of this important area of our City.”
The construction in Old Town Newhall is part of the Downtown Newhall Specific Plan, which is designed to help transform downtown Newhall into a thriving, mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented urban village with a series of economic engines. Along with the streetscape, the City is also moving forward with the construction of a new library facility right in the heart of Old Town Newhall.
