City To Look At New Transit Technology, Bike Lanes At Council Meeting

khts_citymatters_scvlogoAt Tuesday’s City Council meeting, the members will revisit a project, begun in 2007, that will add bicycle lanes on Avenue Scott, Avenue Stanford and Vanderbilt Way in the Valencia Industrial Center.

The funding is coming from the state’s Bicycle Transportation Account, which is administered by Caltrans. That funding is set to expire June 30, 2011, and Caltrans is requiring the City to submit some needed paperwork by November 23.

The project’s design is complete and is currently in the public participation process.

The City will also look at adding an advanced passenger counter system for its transit fleet.

According to a staff report, the new technology will improve the quality of transit services with increased data reliability. By retrieving passenger count data in real-time, City staff will be able to better analyze the usage frequency of its bus routes, and make adjustments accordingly.

Funding for the new technology will come through the federal stimulus program.

The Council is also expected to accept a $100,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the University of California, Berkeley Safe Transportation Traffic and Research Center.

The grant will fund a program that allows for personnel overtime costs to conduct 12 sobriety checkpoints throughout the next 10 months.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
