City Unveils Creative Way to Keep Newhall Clean

Yesterday, the City put new trashcans along San Fernando Road through downtown Newhall. They weren’t ordinary trashcans however; they had a little bit of what you might call…flair.

10 trashcans adorned with pieces of art now line the street, and its all part of an ongoing project to re-define downtown Newhall.

According to Michael Marks, Supervisor for the city’s Arts and Events office, the idea began at a meeting with the Old Town Newhall Association. They requested more trashcans be put on the street to help with litter problems. Then, a member of the Santa Clarita Artists Association stepped forward and offered the idea to have artists paint the cans.

The city approved, and a contest was held to pick the ten different artists.

Finally, after the art was complete, the cans were coated with a graffiti protecting layer, that would make them easily cleaned should someone deface them.

Now they are available, and should catch your eye as you pass by.

Two large murals are also on their way to the area, and should be up by June. The city is currently looking for artists to submit ideas, and they’re willing to pay $3,000 for the winners!
