City Unveils New Biking/Walking Plan

Public Encouraged to Attend Comment Meeting, Monday, May 21, 2007.

The City of Santa Clarita is encouraging residents to attend a public comment meeting for the Biking and Walking Non-Motorized DRAFT Plan on Monday, May 21, 2007, at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Century Room at City Hall, located at 23920 Valencia Blvd.

The City of Santa Clarita’s innovative Non-Motorized Transportation Plan, which was developed with extensive input from Santa Clarita community members, gives a comprehensive overview of bicycling and walking in the City and provides direction for future investments in bicycle and pedestrian facilities and programs.

“This is an excellent opportunity for the City’s community to view large maps, ask questions, and incorporate their ideas and opinions into the design of the Plan,” commented Debbie Helbig, City Project Development Coordinator. “We look forward to residents participating in making alternative transportation choices even more feasible in Santa Clarita.”

The main goals of the Plan are to ease the current traffic congestion in the City and to encourage future decreases in motor vehicle use, by making it easier and more enjoyable to bicycle and walk as an everyday type of commute. In addition, the Plan will encourage transit use and also address equestrian needs in the City.

The Plan contains recommendations for additions and improvements to bikeways, trails and pedestrian facilities, land uses that promote walking and cycling, ways to improve access to transit and educational and encouragement programs.

Light refreshments will be served and families are encouraged to bring their children.

The public comment period will end on June 1, 2007.

The DRAFT Plan is available to review at the City Hall Planning and Engineering Counter on the third floor and can also be viewed and downloaded at
