Civil Rights Movement Highlighted In City Theatrical Performance

khts_citymatters_scvlogoThe City of Santa Clarita will host the Theatrical Presentation: Freedom Child on Tuesday, February 15 as part of the City’s A Season of Diversity program. The event, held at 6 p.m. at La Mesa Junior High School, will feature an informative performance highlighting the Civil Rights Movement.

Freedom Child will recall the life of Dr. Bernadette McAllister, a woman who at the age of 13 took part in the 1963 “Children’s Crusade,” held in Birmingham, Alabama in response to Civil Rights issues.  More than 1,000 African-American children participated in the historic demonstration that helped to change race relations in America.

From October 2010 through February 2011 the City of Santa Clarita celebrates A Season of Diversity, a program dedicated to promoting positive human relations and acceptance of people in every aspect of community life. “The goal is to make Santa Clarita a place that promotes understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity,” said Mayor Marsha McLean, “a place where people can coexist with a better understanding of each other.”
A Season of Diversity is made possible in part by the City’s Human Relations Forum. The program offers a safe and supportive way for local youth to learn about and cope with issues in a multicultural world.  La Mesa Junior High School is located in Canyon Country at 26623 May Way.
