There aren’t many fundraisers easier than this.
It doesn’t require dressing up, buying anything special, assembling a basket or attending a function where you spend money on things you don’t really need.
In fact, it’s that “things you don’t need” part that becomes the centerpiece.
Every Saturday in October, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., smiling volunteers will welcome people to the side gate of Sierra Vista Junior High School on Camp Plenty Road, their sleeves rolled up, ready to take donations for Goodwill Industries.

The school is collecting items for the charity, which will pay the school for every truck filled with goods and furniture.
It’s a win-win situation for both the school and Goodwill.
Julie Regan, the parent volunteer who is organizing the collection, said that this fundraiser seemed more appropriate during tough financial times.
“It’s something that’s new in our valley, actually I was part of one last year with Canyon High School girls’ volleyball team,” she said. “They let you coordinate it any way you like. What they do is set up one day where they coming to pick up. You could be collecting for the weeks before you know they’re coming, or just for that day.
“With Sierra Vista, we figured it worked well because we have the location of the school that’s central to everyone, to set up a drop-off spot for every Saturday in October. It’s convenient, something people can remember and we’re open all day from 8 to 4.”
Regan said that they are looking for donations of both goods and volunteer hours. Helpers don’t have to be parents at the school and if they are students, they will get credit for service hours.
“If we have enough parent volunteers, we’re hoping that we can arrange to do pickups if people have large items, such as furniture.”
“We launched this program in March 2010 to help local nonprofits when times started getting tough,” said Kevin Berry, spokesman for the Donations Center at Goodwill’s main Los Angeles office.
“They make money based on filling a 28-foot trailer, which can hold two types of items – bulk furniture (for which the charity gets a little less) and other re-salable goods”
For every truck they fill, the school gets a donation from Goodwill. Regan said that the drive at Canyon High did very well for the sports team and that it’s feasible that Sierra Vista could make between $3,000 to $5,000.”
The drive actually started last Saturday, and Regan said that it was a good start.
“We did much better than we thought,” she said. “We had sort of short notice out to the public, but we did have some folks who distributed flyers at garage sales. People brought what was left when they were finished with their garage sales and we had a number of parents who brought items in.”
“If we could raise close to what we typically raise for our annual auction, we would be happy. Because this way, there would be less impact to the families, they’re not having to spend any money making donations for the auction or purchasing things at the auction, they’re just getting rid of items that are already in their garage.
“While I love the auction because 100 percent of the proceeds go to the school, it really is a hardship on the parents, because it’s a tough time,” she said.
