Baby boomers, country and classic music lovers will be pleased.
Grammy winners, members of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and even honorees of the Walk of Western Stars will grace the stage at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons during the 2008-2009 season.
Art Garfunkel, Bill Medley, Riders In the Sky and the comedy group Capitol Steps are among the performers sure to entertain every age and interest on the ambitious schedule that was announced during a gala event Thursday evening. It’s a season where there’s clearly something for everybody.
Opening the season on September 12, Bill Medley, the surviving half of the Righteous Brothers, will bring his blue-eyed soul to the center, crooning familiar songs such as “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” and the Oscar-winning “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” from “Dirty Dancing.”

Just in time for election hilarity, the comedy improv group Capitol Steps, an irreverent group of current and former Congressional staffers, will perform September 27. Country fans will not be disappointed, as the Grammy-winning Riders In the Sky bring their unique Western melodies to the center April 22 to get everyone in the mood for the city’s annual Cowboy Festival.
Garfunkel, the winner of five Grammy Awards, will be making a special appearance with the Santa Clarita Symphony on January 11. A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he has 12 solo albums to his credit.
The legendary Tom Rush will perform May 16 with The Lovell Sisters. Rush has been credited with inspiring musical greats such as James Taylor, Garth Brooks and Joni Mitchell. Rush will be matched with The Lovell Sisters, whose fusion of country, folk and contemporary acoustic sound is one of the hottest things in music today.
Get ready to dance when Los Lobos closes the season on May 29 with a wide-ranging repertoire of blues, rockabilly, jazz, Latin and their own, unique Mexican-American sound.
The center will be a special place during the holidays, with the Go Country Acoustical Concert featuring American idol contestants Phil Stacey and Josh Gracin in an Acoustic Holiday Concert December 7 and a concert by the COC Music Department on December 12
Two intimate cabaret performances are planned, the first on October 9 when actor/singer Susan Egan will entertain up-close and personal with audience members on the stage and again on Valentine’s Day when Lee Lessack and Joanne O’Brien perform Broadway love songs.
Children’s programming includes Junie B. Jones the musical, Los Angeles Opera’s “Figaro’s American Adventure” and the Tweaksters. A new arts education program will invite school kids to attend special performances with artists visiting the schools as well.
The season also includes the college’s theatre department with performances of “South Pacific,” Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House” and its outstanding New Works Festival. The Santa Clarita Regional Theatre will offer performances of the musicals “Grease” and “A Chorus Line.”
Additional shows include performances by the Spencers: Theatre of Illusion; the visual spectacle of Diavolo; Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, the Hunt Family Fiddlers, a special free chamber recital by Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and much more.
