Comedy For Canines: Running A Shelter Can Be A Laughing Matter

queenieFundraising is a funny animal. And when the funny is for the animals, it takes on a whole new meaning.

Comedy for Canines, a charitable event planned for the Brittany Foundation at JR’s Comedy Club at Marie Callendar’s this Friday, Sept. 16 is a popular way to help some dogs who are facing a tough time.

Tickets are $20, with a two item drink or food minimum. Comedians Tim Schmidt and Lenny Gaither will be performing.

“Brittany Foundation is a no-kill dog rescue in Agua Dulce,” said Michelle Sathe, a foundation board member. “We’re hoping to raise between $1,500 and $2,000 between ticket sales, a raffle and a fantastic silent auction.”

The group houses 75 dogs who have no where else to go. Targeted at the senior special needs and hard-to-place dogs, such as pit bulls, rottweilers and chows, the Agua Dulce facility needs all the help it can get.

Sathe said that this was the second year for the event, which the group does in the spring and the fall.

“All of our money that we raise from any fundraiser goes to operation expenses at Brittany, and that includes taking care of our 75 plus dogs,” she explained. “It’s a no-kill sanctuary, so any dog that doesn’t find a home lives there forever. It doesn’t matter what breed they are.”

Funds raised go toward the feeding and medical care of the dogs, as well as overhead for the property. Most of the staff are volunteers, but expenses tend to stack up.

“It’s pretty expensive,” she said. “Our weekly food bill can be between $400 and $500.”

Along with the comedy night, the Brittany Foundation holds a monthly bake sale at the Santa Monica Antiques Market the fourth Sunday of every month as well as their “Day In Their Paws” event coming up Nov. 12.

Last year, Sathe and several other volunteers selected a dog to spend 24 hours with in a kennel.
”We raise freedom by sponsors pledging a dollar a minute,” she explained. “We do it not only to raise funds, but to raise awareness of how shelter dogs live day after day. Even if someone donates $5 or $10, it all adds up.”

JR’s Comedy Club in Marie Callendar’s is located at 27630 The Old Road in Valencia. For more information or tickets to the event, email Michelle at sathewords@yahoo.com or call 661-803-2909.
