Community Hiking Club Takes Steps To Make Ecological Difference

savetheworldWhat if we took the belongings that have piled up in our house and we gave them, free of charge, to people who found a use for them?  We would be creating a healthy cycle of giving and taking that lessens the amount of waste we produce.

Recycling and reducing waste is just one of many goals of the Community Hiking Club, a Santa Clarita community based, non-membership club that includes hiking, camping, eco education, and more. At many events that the club takes part in and at all the events the club will host, they present items collected from community members to the rest of the community to take free of charge.

“What we want to do is have people donate things that they are tired of. They can give it to us and we’ll put them on the table and people can just come by and take what they like, no strings attached,” said Dianne Erskine-Hellrigel, president of the Community Hiking Club.

Erskine-Hellrigel says this is just a small step to creating a community that wastes less and appreciates more.

“We can’t continue to be such a society that throws away everything. We have to be more careful, we have to recycle,” Erskine-Hellrigel said.

The Club also works to clean up after illegal dumping and to also preserve the lives of the animals native to the area. The club alongside the Sierra Club hosted an event called “Save the Condors” which entailed micro-trash pickup on Magic Mountain. By the end of the day, more than 500 pounds of harmful trash, such as broken glass and plastic, was collected in order to keep the Condor species safe and unharmed.

Upcoming events that the club will take part in that will include these recycled items table giveaway will be the annual River Rally in April as well as the Children of Many Colors Native American Pow Wow to take place in Moorpark in July.

If you have any items that you wish to give to the Community Hiking Club to be donated, contact Dianne Erskine-Hellrigel at zuliebear@aol.com.
