“This is an opportunity to network with all types of artists, make connections and create relationships with people while exposing them to our music,” said Micah Justice, member of Sweet Mischief. “We’re super stoked and honored to represent Southern California and we hope we kill it for everybody that’s rooting for us.”

Sweet Mischief won the 2017 KHTS Country Showdown, the local round of the national competition, and then the SBVC Battle of the Bands, which was the regional round.

Winning in Raton, New Mexico on Saturday would qualify them to compete in the grand championships in Nashville, Tennessee for a chance to win the national prize of $100,000.

As for the 2017 KHTS Country Showdown, the band drove from the Inland Empire for the competition based in Santa Clarita, but the hours of travel did not stop them from taking home the championship prize.

“We drove a little ways,” said Justice. “But it was absolutely worth it, and this a beautiful place with beautiful people.”

And while they now move onto a country music semi-finals in the hopes of making the championship in Nashville,  some of the Sweet Mischief members have eclectic backgrounds in other types of music.

“I just felt that country music rang a little more true than singing about death and beating people up,” said Jeff Alan, one of the guitarists, explaining why he diverged from playing heavy metal music to country.

KHTS is competing against 450 other radio stations to send local talent to the final leg of the competition in Nashville. Santa Clarita’s only local radio station has sent contestants to the finals four out of the five years they have entered the competition.

“The showdown has brought incredible talent to Santa Clarita,” KHTS Co-Owner Carl Goldman said. “And we’re just the first stage of the national contest.”
