Aliso Canyon Announces New Gas Leak Months After Re-Opening

Aliso Canyon, the controversial gas field that leaked 100,000 gallons of methane into the environment in 2015, experienced a 50-minute-long gas leak Monday evening, according to officials.

A new gas leak was reported Monday night at the Southern California Gas facility near Porter Ranch — two years after the biggest natural gas leak in history, said officials.

Residents who live near the gas field reported smelling natural gas around 5 p.m. Monday. SoCal Gas officials reportedly alerted residents of the incident 90 minutes after the leak had been shut off.

Officials with SoCal Gas called the incident an “unplanned release” of natural gas at the Aliso Canyon Natural Gas Storage Facility.

“The release occurred during a routine operation to pressurize equipment following maintenance,” said a SoCal Gas news release. “The equipment is used in the dehydration process that removes water from natural gas. A flange gasket on the equipment did not function properly, resulting in the release.”

Officials also stated that their highest reading along their fence-line monitors, their perimeter detection system, was approximately “66 parts per million.”

Officials have yet to disclose how much gas was released as a result of this leak.

In 2016, Southern California Gas Co. pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count of failing to immediately report the Oct. 23, 2015 gas leak to the California Office of Emergency Services and to the local Certified Unified Program Agency. Pursuant to the plea, SoCal Gas will be ordered to pay $307,500 which includes the maximum fine of $75,000 plus a penalty assessment of $232,500.

Aliso Canyon was cleared to open by state regulators, despite protests from various lawmakers and residents, in a decision made earlier this year.
