“An unknown suspect used a rock to make entry into the shelter,” said Shirley Miller, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station.

Food and hygiene products were among the items stolen from Santa Clarita’s only homeless shelter.

This theft comes after the shelter’s annual Soup for the Soul fundraiser, which raised money for the winter season. Bridge to Home opened for the winter Monday, Nov. 20.

Bridge to Home also recently announced the hiring of Chris Najarro, who previously worked with Family Promise of SCV for about six years, as the center’s director of programming.

“Our major focus right now is the Winter Shelter season,” said Chris Najarro, the shelter’s new director of programming. “And hoping that we can round up some volunteers to meet the needs of the clients.”

Clients always need certain items, officials said.

“The shelter is always in need of cases of water, milk, yogurt, cold and hot cereals and 55 gallon trash bags,” Development and Volunteer Coordinator Maria Dulac said. “If anyone wants to prepare a meal for the shelter, they are more than welcome to call me to set up arrangements.”

The shelter is open for donations seven days a week, from 5:30 a.m. to 6 a.m. in the morning and in the evening from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.

“With the holidays approaching, Dulac said, “we can use all the help we can get right now.”

Bridge to Home can be reached at 661-254-4663.

The shelter is located at 23031 Drayton Street in Saugus.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
