Both John Scalia Jr., 41, and Jameson Scalia, 37, have been residents of Santa Clarita since 1987, but began to formulate their brand of comedy in 2005.

Since then, they’ve started their own YouTube channel, performed at the Hollywood Improv, been featured on TMZ and done standup across the country, according to Jameson Scalia.

“One time, back in 2015, we were seen on KTLA-5 because of the Star Wars premiere,” said Jameson Scalia. “They were interviewing people standing in line asking them how they felt about the new movie and they got to us and we just screamed, ‘Star Wars is back!’ into the camera. They ran the clip for weeks.”

However, before forming Brother Monkeys, comedy was not the chosen profession of John Scalia Jr.

“Well, we started up back in 2005, when my brother got out of the Army where he was a helicopter pilot,” said Jameson Scalia. “John had gone to West Point to be a pilot, and when he got out we started performing together.”

John Scalia Jr. attended West Point from 1994-98, flight school in Alabama from 1998-99 and was stationed in Germany from 1999 to 2003. He was in charge of casualty operations for the European theater for a time, and then stationed domestically from 2003-2005, according to his brother.

“He might be the only West Point grad to become a professional comedian,” joked Jameson. “It’s kind of historical.”

The Brother Monkeys have taken their comedic styles online, performing and filming on sidewalks and street corners throughout Los Angeles County and then posting their best bits on their YouTube channel.

“One time we walked into the Beverly Hills Polo Lounge in full clown gear hoping to entertain the people in there,” continued Jameson Scalia. “We got a mixed bag of emotions with that — half the people liked it and wanted to take pictures with us, the other half were like, ‘How could they do this to us?’”

However, within the boundaries of Santa Clarita, especially over the last three weeks at the corner of Valencia Boulevard and McBean Parkway, the brothers have been attempting to share their gift of comedy with pedestrians and drivers.

Santa Clarita based comedy troop, Brother Monkeys, walk the streets near the Westfield Town Center, dressed as aliens.

“We wear our alien masks and walk the crosswalks slowly (but still within the legal time), handing out peace signs and taking pictures with people,” said Scalia. “We studied the traffic patterns and always walk around 5 in the afternoon so that we catch people on their way back from work, and brighten their day before they get home.”

Jameson stated that whether they’re doing videos in Burbank or Santa Clarita, performing improv in Hollywood, or touring their stand-up, the Brother Monkeys always have the same message.

“Our slogan is: Fun is number one,” said Scalia. “Whenever we do what we do, we try to spread a message of peace and create a positive effect on our community.”

As for the future of Brother Monkeys, they’re planning to keep the YouTube page up and running, and hope to land a role behind, or even on, the big screen.

“We’d love to do our own Brother Monkeys television show, do cameos and eventually be allowed to do our own feature film,” Jameson said, sharing a goal for the pair.

  1. I was involved in a brand new YouTube channel in 2015 and to film anything in Santa Clarita at that time you needed a permit to film. Even students need a special permit. It was a lot more affordable than LA Film which is the agency you need to go through if filming in LA County. He must have money to do all this! Unless he is filming illegally.
