The Kids Loving Animals Within Shelters club, known as KLAWS, has been hosting monthly trips to the shelter for over a year. The next will be a holiday themed visit on Wednesday.

“KLAWS is a program at Castaic (Middle School) that started last year,” said Renee Focht, a shelter volunteer. “They come to the shelter once a month and interact with the dogs, read to the dogs and take photos of the dogs.”

KLAWS club members are planning to write love letters to the animals housed at the Castaic Animal Shelter and attach them to collars they plan to donate to the shelter this week.

During the event, students who are a part of KLAWS will have the opportunity to read these heartfelt letters to the animals as they deliver the collars.

“It’s a wonderful program,” Focht said. “It’s amazing to listen to the dogs quiet down and listen to the students reading their letters”

Officials at the shelter welcome the young animal enthusiasts because they believe they will be the next generation to care for shelter animals.

“This is the next group of shelter volunteers,” Focht stated. “This is going to be the next group bringing awareness about these animals and helping in them finding homes.”

The Castaic Animal Shelter is located at 31044 Charlie Canyon Road in Castaic.
