Child & Family Center officials announced Friday that it will be offering two groups for LGBTQ+ teens and parents starting in September.

Officials from the center said that they are committed to being a safe space for members of the LGBTQ+ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, +) and its allies. The groups are free and open to the community, and will provide support, education, and discussion.

The “Youth Pride Project” group for LGBTQ+ youth, ages 13-17, is scheduled to meet Thursdays from 4:00- 5:00 p.m. The six-week group will provide support and education aimed at helping teens navigate the many feelings associated with sexual orientation. Topics discussed will include psychological ramifications of being LGBTQ+, including depression or feeling suicidal, the coming out process, empowerment and more.

The other group, “Parenting with Pride,” will meet Mondays from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Studies show that one of the key factors in reducing suicide and other mental health concerns in the LGBTQ+ community is an increase in parental support and understanding, according to officials. Parenting with Pride is a six-week educational support group designed for people who have children in the LGBTQ+ community. Parents will learn how their role as a supportive parent is vital to their child’s mental health.

  1. Just say no to kids and the internet they don’t need to know what odd things the adults are into. They will learn soon enough. Best thing is encourage them to blend in with the regulars and just be happy. Adulthood will come soon enough and they can live thier life however they choose and do what makes them happy.
