The event took place Saturday, April 28 at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center from 9-11:30 a.m.
The workshop was offered for free to any Santa Clarita residents, and was designed to train family caregivers to handle the stress of caring for family members with cognitive impairment.
The two keynote speakers were Monique Castillo and Adrianna Guadarrama.
Castillo attended the University of Southern California and received her Master’s in Social Work. She chose to work in this field of helping families deal with the diagnosis of dementia, as she has experienced it herself on a personal level. She understands the hardship of having a loved one with dementia. She joined Alzheimer’s Greater Los Angeles at the beginning of the year and serves as the Care Counselor for the Santa Clarita and San Fernando Valleys. She is based here at the Santa Clarita Senior Center on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. As a care counselor, she provides personalized support and help with care planning in person or by phone.
Guadarrama received her Master’s in Public Health from National University. With seven years of experience working as a caregiver and certified nurse assistant among the aging population, Adrianna pursued a career in public health to educate the community about Alzheimer’s disease and to reduce the stigma associated with the disease. She joined Alzheimer’s Greater Los Angeles two years ago and serves as Manager of Education and Outreach for the Santa Clarita and San Fernando Valleys. She provides culturally sensitive presentations to the general public on a variety of topics related to Alzheimer’s, and also does trainings for caregivers.
The workshop serves both first time participants in theworkshop series and those who have attended regularly.
