COC officials host the event for any and all faculty in the days leading up to the two academic semesters during the year, in hopes that these seminars enhance their teaching and engagement with students.

“Professional Development Week is a great way to transition back into the Fall semester,” said Dr. Tricia George, professor of English at College of the Canyons. “These kind of events allow us to see people, share ideas with our colleagues, and take courses that will prepare us for the coming Fall.”

Along with the technological advancement, institutional effectiveness, student support and the development of model academic and professional programs, participants also had the opportunity to see their colleagues teach on their respective subjects.

For instance, Dr. Phil Gussin, a political science professor at the college, along with students from COC’s Model United Nations team, hosted a 50-minute seminar on the safety of journalists both around the world and within the United States.

“One of things that I like about Professional Development Week is that there are a wide range of workshops that are available for professors and faculty to participate in,” said Gussin. “It’s a great opportunity to learn new things, meet colleagues and grow professionally in such a unique way.”

Discussing aspects of journalism, such as: the Committee to Protect Journalists, an international watchdog for students and freelancers reporting around the world; Algeria, a country with limited free press; and the growing climate of hostility and distrust toward media in the United States; Gussin said he was attempting to engage his peers in lively discussion that would be unique to the other classes offered through the week.

“I wanted to create a seminar that helps professors and faculty engage with a topic that I’m deeply passionate about, and allow some of my students to share their knowledge on the subject,” said Gussin. “ I always enjoy an opportunity that has students and faculty engage in an academic subject in an informal setting.”

Professional Development week continues through the August 17. College of the Canyons classes resume Monday August 21.
