Covered California For Small Businesses Announces Increased Participation, Lower Premiums

The Small Business Majority — a national advocacy organization that conducts scientific polling, focus groups and economic research to help educate and inform policymakers and small business owners — issued a news release on Thursday announcing that participation in Covered California for Small Business (CCSB) increased dramatically during 2017, and participants in the program can expect lower premiums for 2018.

“Covered California for Small Business (CCSB) delivered great news to small businesses (on Thursday, September 7) when it announced that participation in its health insurance marketplace has grown by 25 percent over the past year, and its weighted average premium increase for 2018 will be just 5.6 percent, down from a 5.9 percent increase in 2017,” said Mark Herbert, the Small Business Majority California director, in the release.

Herbert went on to say that his organization is relieved to hear these optimistic reports from the CCSB, in spite of Congressional Republican’s many recent attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and drastically alter the marketplace.

“We’re glad to see CCSB is continuing to support California’s small businesses through sustained growth in its healthcare marketplace and stable premiums,” said Herbert.

Herbert  stressed the importance of the CCSB by highlighting the massive number of small firms utilizing the program because of Covered California’s capacity to provide quality, affordable healthcare.

“A study by the U.S. Treasury Department found that nearly half a million 2014 ACA marketplace participants in California were a small business or a self-employed entrepreneur,”

Herbert concluded his statement by urging lawmakers in Sacramento and around the country to continue to support policies and institutions that feed into these health insurance markets.

“All lawmakers must take the necessary steps to support these critical marketplaces so that small businesses nationwide don’t have to worry about health insurance for themselves or their employees, allowing them instead to focus on their bottom lines,” said Herbert.

  1. The headline is wrong and misleading. The weighted average premiums are increasing 5.6% in 2018 and not going down.
