On Sunday, March 11, residents will have their clocks set an hour forward, giving an extra hour of sunshine at the cost of an hour of sleep.

Clocks across the state will be set forward next week as part of Daylight Saving Time.

The practicality of Daylight Saving Time has historically been debated since the law’s inception.

Farmers reported the law decreased productivity and made life overall harder for them, according to author David Prerau in his book, “Seize the Daylight.”

“If you want to cut off 25 percent of the productiveness of the American farmer, just keep this law on the books,” said Prerau, quoting a 1919 farmers’ lobby against the law.

Traffic studies have also indicated the “lost hour” could impact driver habits on the road, too.

According to a New England Journal of Medicine report from 1996, traffic collisions increased by 8 percent during the spring shift to daylight savings.

“It has been suggested that as a society we are chronically sleep-deprived,” the report also noted, “and that small additional losses of sleep may have consequences for public and individual safety.”

Some major disasters, including the nuclear accident at Chernobyl, the Exxon Valdez oil spill and the destruction of the space shuttle Challenger, have been linked in part to insufficient sleep on the part of involved supervisors and staff,” according to officials.

For the time being however, Daylight Saving remains in effect for California, with drivers out on the road not only commuting an hour earlier, but potentially with an hour less of sleep.
