Independence Day is the “busiest time of the year” for the Castaic Animal Shelter, and because the shelter is almost at full capacity less than a week before the national holiday, the adoption rates for dogs over 35 pounds have been discounted to help clear the shelter.
“Animals get very upset upset on the Fourth of July with the loud noises,” said Officer Donna Harmon with Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control.
Harmon noted animals can even chew their way through fences if left outside. The best course of action, she said, was keeping animals in an indoor room with no windows.
“Before the fourth, get your animals microchipped,” Harmon said. “If, for some unfortunate reason they get out, we can get them back to you.”
For those looking to adopt, the week before Independence Day is one of the best times, she said.
“Please help us help more animals,” Harmon said. “If you have considered adopting, now is the time to do it.”

Why not recommend ACE for dogs? It’s a prescription anti anxiety medication that is the only thing that helps my Lab-Pit mix who gets terrified and destructive
I thought fireworks were illegal in Santa Clarita, so why would scared animals be an issue? Why not cite those breaking the law with fireworks?
It’s amazing how they are “illegal”, but they’re sold just down the road in Fillmore on every corner!
They’re illegal in Santa Clarita and LA County This doesn’t apply to Ventura County like “down the road Fillmore” which is a different county
There will be a city firework show…..
Yes they are illegal but since when do people listen? Adopt a dog or cat. Much better than fireworks.
